From Mid-Level to Senior: How Engineers Gain Experience
Experience accumulates through the scope and impact of systems delivered, not job titles alone. The development process follows concrete stages that shape how engineers approach complex software system challenges, from modernizing legacy applications to implementing ERP services that integrate core business functions.
Career progression stages:
- Early-career (0-3 years): Foundational coding, tool familiarity, executing assigned tickets, learning basic functionality
- Mid-level (3-6 years): Independent task execution, comfort with multiple technologies, assisting junior developers, understanding functional requirements
- Senior (7+ years): Leading feature designs, owning cross-cutting concerns like observability and performance tuning, mentoring teams
At Amber Innovations, experienced engineers own end-to-end features such as a production planning module in a MOM system rather than simply implementing tickets. They handle continuous testing pipelines, security testing protocols, and deployment strategies. Real project patterns include taking legacy on-prem systems built before 2015 and modernizing them into 2026 cloud-native platforms with secure APIs for partners and mobile applications, demonstrating mastery of both existing functionality and forward-looking architecture.
In 2026, Jamaican manufacturers and logistics companies are transitioning from spreadsheets and legacy MES to integrated MOM software managing shop-floor operations in real time. This shift demands experienced software engineers who understand both industrial protocols and modern software development practices.
Key MOM responsibilities senior engineers tackle:
- Integrating PLC/SCADA data streams from factory floors
- Building production dashboards for real-time oversight
- Implementing quality control workflows with proper test coverage
- Connecting MOM systems to ERP and warehouse management platforms via secure APIs
- Conducting system testing and integration testing across software modules
High-level architecture includes edge gateways filtering noisy IoT data at Kingston or Montego Bay facilities, cloud-based data lakes on AWS S3 or Azure Cosmos DB, and secure APIs for supervisors and regional managers. Amber Innovations engineers ensure MOM systems meet strict uptime requirements 99.9% or higher while handling network unreliability common in the region. The testing process involves functional testing checks across all components, with regression testing after each code changes cycle.
Since 2023, large language models and generative AI have become core enterprise software components rather than experimental add-ons. Experienced engineers at Amber Innovations craft what we call “LLM plans” strategic roadmaps for integrating AI capabilities while ensuring compliance and security.
LLM plan components include:
- Evaluating providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, open-source alternatives)
- Deciding between hosted APIs versus self-hosted models for data-sensitive Jamaican government or financial clients
- Designing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows connecting LLMs to proprietary data like maintenance logs and production standards
- Building chatbots, code assistants, and natural-language analytics for MOM command interfaces
Senior engineers mitigate typical AI risks: hallucinations (reduced 80% via grounding), prompt injection, data leakage, and performance costs optimized to under $0.01 per query. They build guardrails, monitoring dashboards, and fallback logic ensuring AI-enabled systems meet business requirements while managing test data appropriately. This involves functional testing vs traditional software testing approaches, adapting functional testing techniques for AI-specific scenarios where expected outputs may vary.
